Then Sings My Soul Saturday - "Victory In Jesus"

|

My grandfather had a great love for the Lord. He was a Baptist minister for many, many years and loved sharing with others the joy he had found in the Lord. He and my grandmother shared a special love for each other and thru that love created a wonderful family legacy. His children, his grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren were so very special to him and each one of us knew it -- with no doubts. He was special and, as a member of his family, we all know how blessed we have been to have him as father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Several years ago grandpa passed away. His funeral was about a 6-7 hour drive from where my family and I live and my husband was unable to attend. My 2 year old son and I set out on our own. After about 5 hours listening to the Wiggles, Barney, Veggie Tales, etc, and no other adult to talk to, I had a real need for some other sort of music. I began singing hymns and 'Victory in Jesus' was one of the first ones that I sang (as it turned out, it was also a hymn we sang at his funeral). As I came to the last phrase of the last verse, "and some sweet day I'll sing up there the song of victory", the tears began to flow. Some of those tears were because I knew I was going to miss grandpa so very much, but I also know that many were tears of joy for him. You see, after all these years on earth sharing his love for the Lord, he is now in heaven singing that song of victory.

Victory in Jesus
I heard an old, old story,
How a Savior came from glory,
How He gave His life on Calvary
To save a wretch like me;
I heard about His groaning,
Of His precious blood's atoning,
Then I repented of my sins
And won the victory.

Chorus
O victory in Jesus,
My Savior, forever.
He sought me and bought me
With His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him
And all my love is due Him,
He plunged me to victory,
Beneath the cleansing flood.

I heard about His healing,
Of His cleansing pow'r revealing.
How He made the lame to walk again
And caused the blind to see;
And then I cried, "Dear Jesus,
Come and heal my broken spirit,"
And somehow Jesus came and bro't
To me the victory.

Chorus
O victory in Jesus,
My Savior, forever.
He sought me and bought me
With His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him
And all my love is due Him,
He plunged me to victory,
Beneath the cleansing flood.

I heard about a mansion
He has built for me in glory.
And I heard about the streets of gold
Beyond the crystal sea;
About the angels singing,
And the old redemption story,
And some sweet day I'll sing up there
The song of victory.

Chorus
O victory in Jesus,
My Savior, forever.
He sought me and bought me
With His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him
And all my love is due Him,
He plunged me to victory,
Beneath the cleansing flood.

Melanie,
What a awesome way to remember our loved ones, with hymns. My grandma's favorite song was A Amazing Grace, she passed going 4 years. Hymns are great.

Have a great weekend!

Such a touching post about your grandfather. This song is one of those old hymns that probably holds special meaning for many. I remember my Dad singing it when I was little. Having victory is such a neat thing to sing about. And we all can have it if we choose.

This Saturday is filled with awesome old hymns! I'm not as familiar with this one, but I had a similar experience with "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms" when my beloved Grammy passed onto the great praise sing in the sky!

This post brought tears to my eyes. My grandfather was just the type of man you describe here, and that was one of his favorite hyms. Thank you for sharing.

Amazing that such an "old, old story" has continued to change lives through the centuries. My favorite line, "He sought me and bought me..." Isn't that amazing? HE sought ME! Wow!

Oh, I LOVE this song too! It's funny how some songs can instantly bring tears to the eyes. One of the songs we used in the slideshow at our son's funeral was the Casting Crown version of Amazing Grace. The part that says,

"I was lost but now I'm found, was blind but now I see"

tears my heart OUT. Our son was crippled by the cancer in his legs (too painful to walk) and when I think of what he went through and what he has NOW... well, it's just overwhelming. To be honest, I can't even listen to that song anymore. It just tears me up. There is so much TRUTH to some of those old hymns.

OOOPS.. I didn't mean to take up all your space. LOL! I hope you're having a GREAT weekend!

LOVE YOU!!

Okay.. see, I'm a total goofball! The song I was telling you about isn't by Casting Crowns at all. It's by Chris Tomlin... here are the lyrics. (The chorus will tear your heart out too if you've just lost a loved one... "My chains are gone... I've been set free")

Amazing grace
How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now I'm found
Was blind, but now I see
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed

Chorus:
My chains are gone
I've been set free
My God, my Savior has ransomed me
[Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone) lyrics on http://www.metrolyrics.com]

And like a flood His mercy reigns
Unending love, Amazing grace

The Lord has promised good to me
His word my hope secures
He will my shield and portion be
As long as life endures

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow
The sun forbear to shine
But God, Who called me here below
Will be forever mine
Will be forever mine
You are forever mine

Anyway.. thanks for sharing the song you chose and the story about your grampa. Those grands hold a very special place in our hearts, don't they? =-)
